Rio de Janeiro — In a nerve-racking

Argentinaeventually in extra time: 1-0. It was soccer prodigy Mario Götze who scored the winning goal in the 113th minute.

Beforehand, Germany was the favourite team against
Lionel Messi& co.
However, the final match of World Cup 2014 was much more difficult for the efficient German soccer team than the historic semifinal against Brasil (7-1 win), earlier this week.
The Argentines, who sent home The Netherlands after a penalty shootout, could even claim the best chances for scoring the opening goal in the first half.
In the famous Maracana stadium Gonzalo Higuain failed to punish a rare blunder by Toni Kroos. The German player headed the ball back entirely wrong, which put the Argentine striker in front of the goal all by himself but he failed miserably. Moments later, Higuaín thought to have scored the 0-1 anyway and he cried out loud of happiness, but the Napoli forward was offside.
Germany also had a couple of possibilities. Goalkeeper Sergio Romero made an excellent save on a shot by Andre Schürrle, who came in the German team for the groggy Christopher Kramer after half an hour. Just before half time, Benedikt Höwedes headed against the post, but there had already been flagged for offside.
After the break, Argentina made a jump start. That led to an excellent chance for Lionel Messi in the 47th minute. The captain of the Argentine soccer team saw his shot just go wide. Uproar arose after fifteen minutes in the second half, when German goalkeeper Manuel Neuer knocked down Higuain, who was at full speed after a deep ball. The today mediocre referee Nicola Rizzoli from Italy left the obvious foul, which was just outside the penalty area, unpunished.
While in the first half both soccer teams wanted to force the opening goal, during the progress of the second half they more and more tried to prevent the other team from scoring. The opportunities were scarce and the tension on the pitch rose to boiling point.
Nevertheless, there were a few small chances for Messi, Schürrle and Kroos but both goalkeepers were not getting into trouble. Therefore, like four years ago at World Cup 2010 in South Africa, extra time was needed.
For a long time it looked as if the final of World Cup 2014 would end in a penalty shootout.
Until the 113th minute when Götze scored the liberating goal for the Germans. The substitute received a cross from the other sub Schürrle beautifully on the chest and then left goalkeeper Romero no chance:
1-0 for Germany.
With a few minutes left, Argentina was not able to equalize: Germany wins World Cup 2014 !
Winner World Cup 2014: Germany
For the first time in soccer history a European team manages to win the World Cup on South American soil. Nevertheless, many Brazilians, still mourning about their own soccer troubles, will be relieved arch-rival Argentina is not winning the cup in Brazil...
