Rio de Janeiro — In Brasilia, the capital of Brazil, Belgium was eliminated from World Cup 2014 by
Argenina. An early goal of the
Argentine soccer teamwas too much for the young players of coach Marc Wilmots: 1-0.
After Germany and Brazil also Argentina is through to the semi-finals.
Later tonight, The Netherlands and the surprise of World Cup 2014, Costa Rica, will decide which team will make up the final four remaining World Cup contenders.
Argentina will have to play against one of these two teams in Sao Paulo, next Wednesday.
For the first time ever both Brasil and Argentina qualify for the semi-final of the same world cup soccer tournament.
Higuain finally scored a goal at World Cup 2014; but... an important one
Lionel Messi, star player of Argentina, is also for the first time part of last four. The best soccer player of the decade and his team were out after the quarterfinals in 2006 and 2010.
Argentina has made a mediocre impression at World Cup 2014, but won everything because Lionel Messi was always there when he was needed. Against
Belgium, the soccer team of Argentina finally showed to be capable of better soccer play than only be depending on Messi.
Already in the eighth minute Gonzalo Higuain made it 1-0 with a clever swipe of the world champion of 1978 and 1986. Lionel Messi was again dominating. Especially some distinct through balls to Angel di Maria were brilliant.
Di Maria had been injured after half an hour and had to be substituted. A major setback for the Argentines. Belgium however could barely create opportunities. Beyond a dangerous shot from Kevin de Bruyne and a header from Kevin Mirallas the Red Devils were toothless.
Argentina however was dangerous on the counter. Higuain had a shot at the crossbar after half-time. Belgian coach Wilmots knew he had to intervene and put both Romelu Lukaku and Dries Mertens in the squad. Both players were important witht decisive goals earlier in the tournament.
During World Cup 2014, Belgium is especially strong after the break. Also against Argentina they improved in the second half. Jan Vertonghen passed to Marouane Fellaini, but despite his huge afro he missed with a header. Furthermore, Argentina goalie Romero could just prevent Ezequiel Garay from scoring an own goal.
Despite the domination of Belgium, Wilmots' squad was not really dangerous. Belgium was counting too much on the long ball to Fellaini, who had scored with a header against Russia. Also, changing the again dispappointing Eden Hazard with Nacer Chadli did not work out well for the Belgians. In the final minute of the
quarterfinal between Argentina and Belgium, goalkeeper talent Thibaut Courtois kept Messi off from scoring his usual goal.
Belgium was not creative enough to tear down the Argentine wall and has to go home. For the first time since 1990, Argentina is through to the last four remaining teams at a World Cup soccer tournament.
