After just seven minutes Brasil scored against the Colombians, who made a better impression in the previous matches than Brasil.
Thiago Silva scored after a corner when David Luiz made some diversion at the first goalpost.
Colombia seemed to respond quickly but Juan Cuadrado saw his shot go wide in the 10th minute. During the rest of the first half, both teams were frequently in the attack, but it did not lead to more goals.
In the second half, Brasil and Colombia continued where they left off before half-time: searching for goals. Thiago Silva got a silly yellow card by annoying Colombian goalkeeper David Ospina. As a result, he misses the semi-final against Germany.
Colombia thought it scored the equalizer in the 65th minute, but the goal by Mario Yepes was disallowed for offside. Immediately afterwards David Luiz scored the liberating second goal for Brasil with a superb free kick. By the way, the free kick was given injustly after a minor charge of James Rodriguez. Nevertheless 2-0 for Brasil.
Fifteen minutes before time Colomba got still the ultimate chance to get back into the soccer match. The Brazilian goalkeeper Julio Cesar fouled on Carlos Bacca in the penalty area, so the referee pointed to the spot resolutely. James Rodriguez confirmed his stardom by scoring the penalty and his sixth World Cup 2014 goal: 2-1.
In the remaining time Colombia continued to hunt for the equalizer, but ninety minutes and five minutes extra time were not enough:
Brasil will go to the semifinals, where a confrontation with the soccer team of Germany awaits. Star player of A Seleção, Neymar, will not be able to play against the Germans due to a nasty back injury.
After a rough but not punished charge of Zuñiga, Team Brazil coach Felipe Scolari was forced to change Neymar. Later it appeared
Neymar suffers from a fractured vertebraand cannot play anymore at World Cup 2014.
