Rio de Janeiro — It was not easy for France against the tough team of Nigeria. The
French soccer teamthanked their victory in the second round of World Cup 2014 in Brazil to a blunder of Vincent Enyeama, goalkeeper of
Nigeria. In injury time, France scored again: 2-0.
Vincent Enyeama, Man of the Match until this moment...
After eight years, the national soccer team of France finally won a knockout match at a major tournament.
At World Cup 2006 this happened for the last time, in the semi-finals against Portugal.
A spectacular soccer showdown with Germany now belongs to the possibilities.
The Germans play later tonight against the
soccer teamof Algeria.
France impressed the soccer world in the group stage, but in Brasilia it had great difficulty with the West Africans. The outstanding Nigerian goalie Enyeama kept Nigeria in the match after skilfully saving a volley of France' biggest talent,
After halftime, Nigeria started strong. Ahmed Musa, who scored two goals against Argentina, again played a good match. The best opportunity was for Peter Odemwingie. However, the striker from West Bromwich Albion came across Hugo Lloris, goalkeeper of France. In the 70th minute,
Karim Benzemafinally got his giant chance. The ball passed Enyeama, but a Nigerian defender could save at the goal line.
Nigeria had to face some personnel problems in the capital of Brazil. In the second half Ogenyi Onazi had to leave the pitch after a ridiculous foul of Blaise Matuidi. Twenty minutes before, Efe Ambrose was also out injured. Against Argentina, Michel Babatunde already broke his arm.
France benefited and got more and more controll over the soccer match. Yohan Cabaye afflicted the crossbar with a beautiful shot. Enyeama could keep a header from Benzema still out of his cage. Moreover, the goalkeeper of Nigeria seemed to emerge as the hero of the day, but eventually became a numbskull.
The 31-year-old Enyeama blundered terribly at a corner kick, then Paul Pogba scored eleven minutes from time. In extra time Joseph Yobo scored an own goal, after a clever tap in of Antoine Griezmann.
In the quarterfinal,
France will meet Germany or Algeria in Rio de Janeiro; Nigeria goes back home with heads held high but with a bunch of wounded players as well.
