Rio de Janeiro — Thanks to Jan Vertonghen
Belgiumhas also won its third soccer match in
World Cup 2014 Group H. In Sao Paulo, the captain of the Red Devils scored the winning goal against
South Koreain the 78th minute: 1-0.
In the second round Belgium will encounter Team USA. The Americans reached the knock out stage with four points, behind Germany. In 2002, Belgium was also part of the last sixteen. Back then, the Belgians with current coach Marc Wilmots in the first team, lost against Brasil by 0-2.
The moment of the match against South Korea was the stupid mistake of
Steven Defour. The midfielder made a ridiculous offense and was send off.
Jan Vertonghen, centre of attention against South Korea
The Belgian soccer team, already playing with some bench players, was outnumbered the entire second half.
In the first half, Dries Mertens had to open the score for Belgium. The match winner of the
soccer match against Algeria(2-1) missed a 100% chance which the attacker of Napoli should have finished.
After the break, Belgian goalie Thibaut Courtois misjudged a failed cross of Heung-Min Son. The goalkeeper of Atletico Madrid saw the ball end on the crossbar.
Ultimately, just like against Russia it was Divock Origi who did it. The striker took a good shot and
Jan Vertonghenwas attentive to score in the rebound. It was a personal success for the defender of Tottenham Hotspur, who started against Algeria on the bench. However, he quickly replaced Thomas Vermaelen.
