Rio de Janeiro — Before the soccer match, sports fans were mainly gossiping about a possible deal to draw between
Germany and the United States, but it turned out not to be necessary at all.
Portugal and Ghanawere more or less equal in their third match of the World Cup 2014 group stage, 2000 kilometers inland in Brasilia, the Americans were safe to achieve a spot in the second round even with a small defeat. Germany won the final
soccer match of World Cup Group Gby 1-0.
With the German Jürgen Klinsmann as head coach of the Americans, his friendship with German coach Victor Löw and the fact that both teams were definitely through to the next round with a draw, at least it was expected that the teams would take it easy.
Nevertheless, Germany and Portugal did not want to be blamed for this and the match in Recife showed some tough physical play.
Especially the American soccer team tried to impress the Germans, but could hardly succeed.
Ten minutes after half-time, Thomas Müller scored the only goal of the match. It was his
fourth goal at 2014 World Cup in Brazil. The Bayern München striker took a wonderful shot just from outside the American penalty area.
Portugal - Ghana, the other soccer match in Group G, ended in 2-1, so behind
group winner GermanyTeam USA is through, thanks to a better goal difference.
