Rio de Janeiro — In the third match of
Group F, Nigeriawas beaten by the
Argentine soccer teamof
Lionel Messi: 3-2. Nevertheless, both teams are through to the second round of World Cup 2014 in Brazil. The third contender for an entry in the next stage of the World Cup soccer tournament, was Iran. In the other group match, Iran lost against Bosnia and Herzegovina, which was already eliminated.
Messi scored very early in the soccer match. The superstar of FC Barcelona rammed in the opening goal in the rebound of a shot by Angel Di Maria.
The lead was very short-lived, as Ahmed Musa tricked the Argentine defense, which was still in party mode: 1-1.
When it was almost half-time, the Nigerian goalkeeper seemed to completely misjudge a free-kick of Messi: 2-1, Messi's fourth World Cup goal.
Messi scores by a free-kick: 1-2
This time the fifteen minute break was in between, but two minutes after Messi's goal, in the 46th minute, again Ahmed Musa scored the equalizer. And again the defense of
Argentinadid not make a strong impression.
After 50 minutes, the winning goal was scored by Marcos Rojo. The Argentine defender ran a corner kick with his knee into the goal. Ten minutes later the soccer match was over for Argentina's only star. Messi could take a rest and watch his soccer colleagues play off the match.
Michael Babatunde of Nigeria also did not make it until the end of the soccer game. The Nigerian had a ball against his hand shot by a fellow Nigerian player and thereby it seemed he broke his arm. He was carried off on a stretcher.
Argentina won all its group matches so is winner of Group F with nine points. Nigeria was lucky that Bosnia and Herzegovina cried victory over Iran, so the Africans finish as number two and are through to the
second round of World Cup 2014 in Brazilas well.
