Rio de Janeiro — The
Netherlandsis through to the second round of
World Cup Soccer 2014 in Brazilas
group winner of Group B. The clever Dutch cried victory over the also qualified
Chilean soccer team, for some soccer connoisseurs one of the outsiders for winning the world title.
Sub Leroy Fer: First touch of the ball is a goal!
The final score in Sao Paulo was 2-0 after a header from substitute Leroy Fer and a late strike from the biggest Dutch talent Memphis Depay, also a substitute.
It was more than enough to win Group B and is probably sufficient to
avoid host team Brasil in the second round.
The soccer match in
Arena Corinthians, where the Chileans were supported by tens of thousands passionate fans, was not very exciting though.
However, the Dutch soccer team played a mature, professional and efficient game while Chile was just not able to penetrate the Dutch defense.
In a sluggish first half, there was little excitement. In the first 35 minutes especially Chile, led by Alexis Sanchez, took the initiative, which was expressed in 66 percent of possession. Nevertheless, there were no serious chances for the Chileans. On the other side, especially Arjen Robben panicked the Chilean defense with a few, quick counter attacks. But nothing more.
At the end of the soccer match, Coach Louis van Gaal appeared to have a good hand of changing players. After inserting Memphis Depay (for Jeremain Lens) and Leroy Fer (for Wesley Sneijder) some new ardor came within the team. Less than two minutes on the pitch, Fer rewarded the confidence of the coach with an effective header: 1-0. Already in extra time, Depay also scored his second goal of World Cup 2014 (also accurate against Australia): 2-0.
The third consecutive victory for the Dutch team was a fact. The Netherlands continue in northeastern Brazil, in the sweltering city of Fortaleza next Sunday. The opponent will not be known until later this evening and is usually Mexico or Croatia. But, you never know. It could also be Brasil; another favour of FIFA is allowing group A to play after group B, so Brasil is able to pick its opponent by hand...
