Rio de Janeiro — In the last second of the
soccer match between Portugal and the United States,
Cristiano Ronaldokept Portugal's World Cup hopes alive. Thanks to a great cross of Real Madrid's star striker, Silvestre Varela scored in the 95th minute the equalizer: 2-2.
A victory for the United States would have assured Team USA of an entry into the second round of World Cup 2014 in Brazil. The probability that Cristiano Ronaldo's Portugal will reach the second round is still very small.
USA and Germany will draw next Thursday, both teams qualify for the second round of the World Cup.
Nani scores and Portugal still convinced about winning three points today...
The USA won the first game of the World Cup against Ghana (2-1), but started the soccer match against Portugal dramatically in Manaus. In the fifth minute Nani could score after a blunder by Geoff Cameron; he slammed the ball into the roof of the cage.
Cristiano Ronaldo was fit enough to play and in the course of the first half he put Nani again alone with the keeper. Tim Howard kept the Manchester United striker from scoring though. Shortly before the break, Nani also hit the post.
While Portugal was leading by 1-0, in the second half Team USA was occasionally dangerous. Defender Ricardo Costa had to everything he could to keep Michael Bradley from scoring. However, an American goal was in the air and it fell after 65 minutes. Jermaine Jones scored with a beautiful shot. Just before the 1-1, Ronaldo had a good opportunity but ruined it with a very poor shot.
Then, Clint Dempsey scored the 2-1, but in the very last second Varela stole a point for Portugal, after a great cross of Cristiano Ronaldo. The third matches will decide which team of
World Cup 2014 Group Gwill go through.
