Rio de Janeiro —
Argentinafought tooth and nail to win the second
2014 World Cup soccersoccer match in Matches & Standings Group F - World Cup 2014. After the 2-1 win against Bosnia and Herzegovina, this time Iran was defeated, but it was a very difficult task for the Argentine soccer team. It was well into injury time when
Lionel Messimade the difference after all with a brilliant goal: 1-0.
Before half-time, the
soccer match in Belo Horizontecould hardly entertain.
There were some opportunities for Marcos Rojo, Ezequiel Garay and Gonzalo Higuain, but the Iranians kept their defense closed effortlessly.
Also an invisible Lionel Messi could not make a difference in the disappointing first half. Iranian Jalal Hosseini had a chance but his header went over the crossbar.
After the break there was more action. The
Argentine soccer teamhad most of the ball possession without being really dangerous. Moreover, the best moments were of Iran. After 52 minutes Reza Goochannejhad could score with a header, but the Argentine goalkeeper Sergio Romero could save. Ten minutes later, again the goalie of AS Monaco had to show his skills with a header by Ashkan Dejagah, which he could tap over the crossbar.
A few minutes before the end Iran plunged again dangerously before the Argentine goal, but Reza missed again. In extra time, it was star player Messi himself who scored nicely for Argentina with a long distance kick. With his left foot he popped the ball into the far corner. With the lucky victory over Iran, Argentina has already been qualified for the second round of World Cup 2014.
