Rio de Janeiro — After the surprising 3-1 win over Uruguay, also soccer superpower Italy had to bow in honour. The
soccer team of Costa Ricawon by 1-0 thanks to a goal of Bryan Ruiz. The loss of Italy also means that
England is out of World Cup 2014.
Bryan Ruiz, misfit at Fulham, is sending England home by scoring against Italy
|It took half an hour before the
World Cup soccermatch in sticky Recife started to be exciting. Mario Balotelli hit the ball just in the wrong way causing his attempt to go wide of goalkeeper Keylor Navas' cage.
Just before half time it was Bryan Ruiz who put the Costa Ricans in the lead.
The Fulham employee, last season on loan at PSV in The Netherlands, headed the ball into the goal after a superb cross from Junior Diaz.
The ball was clearly over the line, but to make sure the
goal line technologywas enabled: 0-1 for Costa Rica!
Shortly before, the referee refused to give a penalty to Costa Rica after Joel Campbell had been worked to the ground in the Italian penalty area. Much to the anger of the Costa Ricans.
The second half was a great struggle for the Italians. The Costa Rican soccer team showed great possession play without giving the Azzurri much opportunity to play their game. The Italians were not dangerous at all in the Costa Rican box and Costa Rica could easily play off their second soccer
match in Group D.
The Italian failure also has implications for Team England at World Cup 2014. On Thursday, the English soccer team lost their second World Cup match and only had the slight chance of reaching the next round if Italy would win today and their last group match.
That did not happen: England out, Costa Rica the Giant Slayer almost through, Italy in contemplation. A scenario for this World Cup 2014 'Group of Death' nobody would have thought of...
