2014 Brazil, 5 times
world champion, will be host country of the
20th editionof the second largest sports event in the world after the Olympic Games: the FIFA World Cup Brazil 2014. It will be the second edition organized by Brazil (first time in 1950) and the first time held in South America after 1978 (hosted by Argentina).
In 2003 it was decided by FIFA the edition of 2014 would be held in
South America. Besides Brasil, Argentina (unofficially) and Colombia were the other countries willing to be host country. However, at the end of 2006 Argentina withdrew and a few months later Colombia did the same: Brazil became the only remaining candidate.
|It did not mean it was sure of the assignment however; Brazil still had to prove it was able to meet the quality standards of FIFA. If necessary, FIFA would pick a host from another continent. Nevertheless, on the 30th October 2007 FIFA officially declared Brazil the organizing country of the World Cup in 2014.
The 2014 World Cup finals will be played in 12 host cities and 12 venues, while FIFA rules say there should be a maximum of 10 host cities. Brazil was

The final will be played in the famous
Maracana stadium of Rio de Janeiro, while Sao Paulo and Belo Horizonte will host the semi-finals. The opening game will be played in Sao Paulo as well. The match which determines the 3rd place will be played in Brazil's capital, Brasilia.
Currently Brasil, as host, is the only team that are qualified yet. Besides Sao Paulo (the opening game), Brasil will play its other two group stage matches in Fortaleza and Brasilia.
