Rock in Rio, the largest music festival in the World !
|Rock in Rio is the largest music festival in the world !
Initialized by entrepreneur Roberto Medina in cooperation with Brazilian brewery Brahma, that wanted to rejuvenate its brand, the first edition of Rock In Rio took place in Rio de Janeiro in 1985. The festival was attended by 1.4 million people. Rock in Rio 1985 lasted 10 days and was headlined by Queen, George Benson, Yes, Rod Stewart and AC/DC.
The festival covered an area of 250,000 m2 (around 2.7 million square feet) and is called Cidade do Rock (‘Rock city’). It was holding crowds of up to 250,000 people in one night and had restaurants and shops.
The first three editions of Rock in Rio were held in Rio de Janeiro with large intervals(1985, 1991, 2001). During the ‘00s the festival concept expanded to Europe; Lisbon and Madrid have been hosting 6 editions under the same name, which caused quiet some controversy among fans.
Only in 2011,
the festival came back home to Rio de Janeiro. A brand new Cidade do Rock, close to the old site, has welcomed around 90,000 revellers a day as well as headlining acts like Coldplay, Shakira, Metallica and often recurring acts Red Hot Chili Peppers and Guns n' Roses.
The edition of 2012 was organized by Lisbon as well as Madrid.
From 13 until 22 September 2013 however, Rock in Rio will return to its roots, when Rio de Janeiro will be host once more.
In the near future, other cities will be included in the schedule: Buenos Aires (Argentina), Barcelona (Spain) and Lima (Peru).
In 2015, Rock in Rio VI again will be held in Rio de Janeiro.
