What to do Brasilia - Day trips
Pirenopolis is a
lovely town in the state of Goias, which entirely encloses the Federal District of Brasilia.
Pirenopolis has cobblestone streets and a picturesque, compact centre. Rustic mansions from the 18th century are interspersed with 20th century Art deco
Pirenopolis accommodates a few notable churches and
museums, a lovely small theatre and quite a few good
For hiking options around Pirenopolis, try the nearby forest Santuário de Vida Silvestre Fazenda Vagafogo, about 12 km/ 7.5 miles from Pirenopolis town. Beware, much of the tranquillity of Pirenopolis will be gone when troops of weekend refugees from Brasilia will be here.
Once the capital of the huge state of Goias (in present day this is Goiania), Cidade de Goias is a nice colonial town. Like the ones in Minas Gerais, gold was the reason for building a settlement in this remote area.
Cidade de Goias preserved beauty can also match that of the colonial towns 1000 km south-eastward. Moreover, its authenticity and rawness make Cidade de Goias arguably more pure and ‘real’. UNESCO is of the same opinion by declaring the town of Cidade de Goias World Heritage Area in 2002.
When walking in the cobblestone streets or the shaded squares, it seems that time stood still in Cidade de Goias...
On the other hand,
many events are organised in Cidade de Goias(also called just ‘Goiás’, ‘Vila Boa’ or ‘Goiás Velho’) and it seems there is always something going on in town.
We recommend to spend at least 2 days on a trip to Cidade de Goias, for example in combination with Pirenopolis.
