Bizarre Brazil: Hire a certified Santa Claus for Christmas
By Frans van Hees | www.AboutBrasil.com | Week 45, November 2015
Rio de Janeiro — In 2015, it is much busier than in recent years at the
Santa Claus school in Rio de Janeiro. There are twice as many applications than in previous years of men who want to dress up in a red suit and white beard during the festival months. Not strange when you know that you can earn about 3500 euros (US$ 3850) a month being
Santa Claus in Rio de Janeiro.
The influx is due to
unemployment in Brazil, which is at the highest level since 2009. In forty days, the
school in Rio de Janeiro will get about two hundred aspiring Fathers Christmas prepped. There is a lot of exercising and the students get explained how best to wear a beard and clothing. And Santa s school also means singing. Lots of singing.
Lima Chem Cherem is director of the Santa Claus school. He sees that the number of applications rises, but there is actually less demand for Santas: things do not go well in the Santa Clause industry due to the
economic crisis in Brazil. "Our people will then agree to a lower reimbursement for fear of losing their jobs," says Mr Cherem.
The Santas who are active in Rio de Janeiro, will earn between 800 and 3850 dollars per month. It depends on whether you have occasional jobs, or such as a 'permanent' assignment where you are hired more frequently. Especially these kind of jobs in shopping malls for instance are good for cash flow.
By the way, not everyone may attend the Santa course in Brazil. The candidates are often unemployed or retired, but that is not a requirement. However, a man should be in possession of a large belly, have a good beard and over the age of fifty.
