According to prosecutors, the young mayor enjoyed a life of luxury in the city of
São Luís, 275 km from the town which she was supposed to lead. She only had contact with the municipal administration through text messages.
In 2012, Ms Leite decided to take part in the local elections. Her partner
Beto Rocha was excluded, because he was suspected of corruption. After Ms Leite was elected, she appointed her boyfriend as advisor. According to her lawyer the 'inexperienced' Leite delegated many tasks to her partner.
mayor is now running from justice after being linked with a million fraud involving the school system in Bom Jardim. As a result of the fraud, this system completely collapsed and teachers are no longer paid.
Against Ms Leite and Mr Rocha now arrest warrants have been issued.
