Carnaval in other cities of Brazil & Out-of-season Carnival
When you are in
Rio de Janeiroor
Salvadorfor Carnaval and your are fed up with the massiveness, you can join Carnaval festivities on a slightly smaller scale in nearby Paraty and Porto Seguro respectively. Both have very cheerful street parties, but tend to be more spontaneous and safer than the ones in the big cities.

|For the rest of the country, almost every settlement of any size will organize at least something.
Carnaval festivals in Brazilwith a national reputation are
Florianopolisin Santa Catarina and
Ouro Preto and Diamantinain Minas Gerais.
Even Manaus in Amazonas goes out of its mind (there is even a sambódromo in the jungle city!).
Last but not least, do not worry if you miss out on being in Brazil in February for the 'real thing':
Some cities organize very amusing ‘out-of-season’ Carnival events.
Examples are Fortaleza (‘Fortal’, last week of July), Sao Luis (‘Marafolia’, Mid October), Maceio (‘Maceió Music Festival’, Mid September) and Natal (‘CarNatal’, first week of December).
