  The Hino Nacional Brasileiro is

the national anthem of Brazil

.

The music is composed by Francisco Manoel da Silva (1795 - 1865), and from 1831 it was used as the melody for

songs to celebrate the withdrawal of Emperor Pedro I of Brazil

.

The current lyrics were written by Joaquim Osório Duque Estrada (1870 - 1927), and were adopted as the national anthem in 1922, during

the 100th anniversary of the independence of Brazil

.

Original Portuguese lyrics English translation

HINO NACIONAL BRASILEIRO NATIONAL ANTHEM OF BRAZIL

Primeira Parte First stanza

Ouviram do Ipiranga as margens plácidas The placid banks of Ipiranga heard
De um povo heroico o brado retumbante, the resounding cry of a heroic people
E o sol da Liberdade, em raios fúlgidos, and in shining rays, the sun of liberty
Brilhou no céu da Pátria nesse instante. shone in our homeland's skies at this very moment.

Se o penhor dessa igualdade If the assurance of this equality
Conseguimos conquistar com braço forte, we achieved by our mighty arms,
Em teu seio, ó Liberdade, in thy bosom, O freedom,
Desafia o nosso peito a própria morte! our chest shall defy death itself!

Ó Pátria amada, O beloved
Idolatrada, idolized homeland,
Salve! Salve! Hail, hail!

Brasil
, um sonho intenso, um raio vívido,
Brazil, an intense dream, a vivid ray
De amor e de esperança à terra desce, of love and hope descends to earth
Se em teu formoso céu, risonho e límpido, if in thy lovely, smiling and clear skies
A imagem do Cruzeiro resplandece. the image of the Southern Cross shines resplendently.

Gigante pela própria natureza, Giant by thine own nature,
És belo, és forte, impávido colosso, thou art beautiful, thou art strong, an intrepid colossus,
E o teu futuro espelha essa grandeza. and thy future mirrors thy greatness.

Terra adorada Beloved Land
Entre outras mil amongst a thousand others
És tu, Brasil, art thou, Brazil,
Ó Pátria amada! O beloved homeland!

Dos filhos deste solo To the children of this land
És mãe gentil, thou art a gentle mother,
Pátria amada, beloved homeland,
Brasil! Brazil!

Segunda Parte Second stanza

Deitado eternamente em berço esplêndido, Eternally laid on a splendid cradle,
Ao som do mar e à luz do céu profundo, by the sound of the sea and the light of the deep sky,
Fulguras, ó Brasil, florão da América, thou shinest, O Brazil, finial of America,
Iluminado ao sol do Novo Mundo! illuminated by the sun of the New World!

Do que a terra mais garrida Than the most elegant land abroad,
Teus risonhos, lindos campos têm mais flores, thy smiling, pretty prairies have more flowers
"Nossos bosques têm mais vida", "Our meadows have more life",
"Nossa vida" no teu seio "mais amores". "our life" in thy bosom "more love".

Ó Pátria amada, O beloved,
Idolatrada, idolized homeland,
Salve! Salve! Hail, hail!

Brasil, de amor eterno seja símbolo Brazil, of eternal love be the symbol
O lábaro que ostentas estrelado, the starred banner thou showest forth
E diga o verde-louro dessa flâmula and proclaim the laurel-green of thy pennant
'Paz no futuro e glória no passado.' 'Peace in the future and glory in the past.'

Mas se ergues da justiça a clava forte, But if thou raisest the strong gavel of Justice,
Verás que um filho teu não foge à luta, thou wilt see that a son of thine flees not from battle,
Nem teme, quem te adora, a própria morte. nor does he who loves thee fear his very own death.

Terra adorada Beloved Land,
Entre outras mil amongst a thousand others
És tu, Brasil, art thou, Brazil,
Ó Pátria amada! O beloved homeland!

Dos filhos deste solo To the children of this land
És mãe gentil, thou art a gentle mother,
Pátria amada, beloved homeland,
Brasil!
Brazil!
